heartbreak superhighway
The creator economy promised freedom but delivered chronic anxiety. We've spent years worshipping at the altar of metrics, algorithms, and optimization until we're blue in the face. And where has it left us? Oddly hollow, increasingly anxious, and with the nagging sensation that we're performing authenticity rather than living it.
Everyone online feels like they're grinding themselves into content dust, posting because they should rather than because they have something to say… at what cost?
What if the thing we're optimizing for is actually killing the thing that makes us irreplaceable?
the data your body already knows
In Pleasure Activism, adrienne maree brown taught me that what brings us joy brings us power. I've been thinking about this through the lens of brand strategy, because 90% of the process of working with creators on their personal brands comes down to how it feels in the body.
Our nervous systems process audience response faster than Google Analytics ever could. That gut feeling when you're about to hit publish is a sophisticated pattern recognition technology that's been developing since childhood. Your body knows which content will resonate before your brain catches up.
I’ve been designing my life around my nervous system (and advising my clients to as well)…the majority of the healing is around technology & our self worth (because we’re not meant to move at the pace of tech!). Posts that felt scary-good (nervous but generative) consistently outperformed posts that felt scary-bad (anxious and forced). Client calls where I felt grounded led to better partnerships than ones where I was performing competence while internally spiraling.
The pattern became impossible to ignore: regulated nervous system = clearer decisions = better opportunities. While everyone else A/B tests their way to burnout, creators operating from alignment are building businesses that actually sustain them.
This has led to realizing that wealth = nervous system alignment & good faith human connection / community.
the cultural shift
Nervous system awareness has increased in the wake of lockdown – when most of us realized we’re exhausted from performing…and we’ve seen a culture increasingly immune to performance in daily life.
How this translates more immediately is the way we feel when we record a piece of content. Audiences can sense when someone is creating from scarcity versus abundance, from anxiety versus excitement. The energetic quality of your internal state transmits through everything you make. No amount of optimization can fake the feeling of content created from a regulated place.
Welcome to my snail framework: slowing down to stand out in a speed-obsessed culture. While everyone else posts frantically, the creators who build in rest are becoming magnetic. Their content feels different. Less desperate. More trustworthy.
your nervous system as business intelligence
This isn't about abandoning strategy for feelings. It's about upgrading the strategy to include the data from your physical body.
Three-breath check before posting, client calls, big decisions. Not as spiritual practice, but as business practice. Your nervous system state affects every choice: who you say yes to, how you price your work, what opportunities you notice or miss.
Use pleasure as compass. The content that lights you up to create usually lights up your audience to consume. That collaboration that "looks good on paper" but makes your stomach tight? Your body is giving you strategic information about energetic misalignment.
Energy audit everything. Which clients leave you energized versus depleted? Which types of content feel sustainable versus extractive? Your nervous system is constantly generating business intelligence about what's aligned and what isn't.
your new self care routine
A regulated nervous system is infrastructure, not luxury. When we operate from alignment, we make clearer decisions, set better boundaries, attract aligned opportunities, and create content that connects rather than just converts. Especially in a time of increased misinformation and rage baiting.
The creators who understand are building sustainable businesses while modeling a different way of working that doesn't require sacrificing humanity for success. They're proving that sustainable growth comes from sustainable humans.
You can optimize everything… except what makes you irreplaceable. Algorithms can tell you when to post and what hashtags to use, but they can't replicate the energetic quality of content created from joy versus desperation. Again, we go at the pace of our bodies!
insights over the horizon
I have a couple of “predictions”. First: there will be a rise in creators prioritizing nervous system health over the next decade. Not because they're posting more or growing faster, but because they're offering society the most critical modality of wellness.
Second: nervous system healers, grief workers, and death doulas are going to become the most sought-after services in the near future. We're collectively processing decades of accumulated trauma while navigating unprecedented global uncertainty. The people who can help us regulate, grieve, and integrate are going to be essential infrastructure for human functioning.
In a world where everything can be automated, somatic wisdom becomes competitive advantage. The ability to sense what's aligned, to create from joy, to build without burning out is what will distinguish human creators from algorithmic content.
In spite of *gestures broadly* everything, your most aligned self is your most true and powerful self. Your magic and power are needed right now. So repeat after me:
“my nervous system is my bank account”
